I don't know about you. But I prefer to work from home. I don't even want to do hybrid or any other form.
Elon and his thoughts
He has some interesting and autocratic thoughts. Like the below news. I mean how is it morally wrong? I really don’t get his point.
It's like, really, you're going to work from home and you're going to make everyone else who made your car come work in the factory?" Musk said. "You're going to make the people who make your food that gets delivered that they can't work from home? You know, the people that fix your home, they can't work from home, but you can? Does that seem morally right? That's messed up.
- Elon Musk
I mean what’s the point here? There is none. He is comparing apples to oranges. He is the one who trying to shift mankind to a different planet, but he still can't accept working from home. Sad!
Although I agree with his fear of AI. I can see or feel some danger in the distant future. But, I think we have to wait and see how all these regulations are going to work.
Yeah it’s a privilege
Some people call it a privilege. Ok like many others I also acknowledge that. But it comes with a tech job these days. That’s why people coming into the tech field mostly. To enjoy the privilege.
If a tech job can't do fully remote, what’s the point of these technologies? I understand that it’s difficult to go fully remote if an organization invested heavily in office space and other utilities. But at the end of the day, it’s the outcome that counts right?
There have been a lot of articles, LinkedIn posts, and blog posts about the benefits of going back to the office, and it can be hard to tell which ones are genuine and which ones are just corporate propaganda.
I’m doing work at home for the past four years and it is the best work experience so far. I got a lot of benefits (I mean mentally) from it. One of them is the escape from the little “fun activities”. I absolutely hate it, but the people who keep pushing this won't get it. With the help of WFH, I can finally so no to that.
I only choose works that provide this way of work. I can understand that the employers have doubts about it, but all I can say I have been doing this for the past four years, and my colleagues and manager can approve this. In fact, the current founder I’m working with is in the UK and we only saw our faces two or three times in these 14 months. But we have no problem communicating ideas and plans. It’s all about the mindset.
I’ll not misuse this opportunity at any point. I don't want to be that guy. I have some values about my profession and I have work ethics which I’m proud of.
A few things about my perspective on working at home:
My productivity and concentration are higher when I’m working at home. I close all distractions when I’m starting my work.
I can play music at a higher sound and no one will mind.
My stress level decreased - a lot of factors, one is I don't have to travel.
I can control my diet with homely food.
Everyone is just a message away, and with the help of proper documentation, handover is easy.
I can save a lot of time and money which is unnecessary (which doesn't mean I have to earn less. Salary is the compensation for my work, please don’t complicate things for corporate’s sake.)
I hate to travel for work in this humidity and worst climates.
Improved work-life balance - I can say this for sure. But job stress is different.
I can choose where to work without having to worry about relocation.
I can work in casual dress and I don't have to buy a lot of dresses every now and then (shopping is a difficult task for me.)
I don't have to worry about the cleanliness of the toilet.
Moreover, it’s a big benefit to the employer if he/she knows how to manage distributed employees. It’s a big opportunity for talent out there. All they have to do is build a better culture for “humans”.
I am not tired at the end of the day if compare it to office life.
I can work at my pace and without any distractions from co-workers. I don't really like corporate forced fun and other activities.
I do not have to worry about dealing with office politics.
I have a nice laptop with good specs.
I installed an inverter for an undisrupted power supply and brought a big monitor along with a work table and neck-supported chair.
No internet connectivity issues so far, I changed to fiber a long time ago.
I’m rarely late and that is one of my professional values.
I can be with my family all the time, especially now that they are getting old and need me.
Realization
Yesterday I saw a Reddit post screenshot in an Instagram account and it strikes differently. I thought about it a lot. And it makes total sense to me.
At least everyone now knows that companies don't care about their employees after a certain period. We all are just a number in their business model. Working hard now indirectly means exploitation. I mean you have to work hard to achieve some goals, that is why they hired you. But that doesn't mean that you have to work late.
Work-life balance is not a Gen Z-made-up term like some say. It defines the life of a human working in tech. I have found a lot of guys who just want to get out of this tech world including me. People need to evolve and build a more people-friendly work atmosphere. I have heard that Germany provides better employee protection.
Consider this post too. I agree in some cases. But not generalizing.
