Social media is at a turning point, shaping its future with each step. At the same time, it’s becoming more polarized than ever. The platforms that reach millions and help them stay informed should be free from centralized control. Otherwise it is difficult to even hope for a better future.
Bluesky is opening new opportunities, giving us a chance to build something meaningful together. I can see why some people dont want to use Bluesky, because it is not addictive like other platforms. And people dont want to spend even a minute to find a feed that works for them. It’s all understandable. I guess that’s the biggest challenge for Bluesky now.
Bluesky has over 30 million users and is growing fast. I think and I strongly believe this is the change world needs right now. I don't know how you feel about Bluesky, but I see great potential in it.
For a long time, the internet has been designed to keep people in a constant state of high engagement. No matter how much we consume, even when we feel numb, we crave more. Escaping from that event horizon is the difficult and most needed part.
This addiction, combined with rage-bait and clickbait news, creates the perfect recipe for controlled chaos. Blocking out news feeds entirely might seem like the solution, but it’s not ideal. As Mark Twain put it:
If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed.
This is the paradox we want to solve.
For a while, I thought citizen journalism could be the key to change. But I think it’s not very effective (But it still coulde be). Because it often leads to cult-like echo chambers.
There’s a reason why people in power dislike fact-checkers and their organizations. And a feature like Community Notes takes time to evaluate a claim, but by the time it does, misinformation has already reached thousands.
The press was once considered the fourth pillar of democracy, but that idea is either gone or on the verge of extinction. There’s a quote from the movie The Post (2017)
This blog is something to think about. This is that one idea I always try to solve. But I don't know how (yet).
